Orcas Island visit posted by Jack

Took first international trip with Retro Rocket . We had been warned that US and Canadian customs were unforgiving and if anything was out of order we would end up getting fined or put in custody until matters resolved. Out of order means paperwork , being more than 5 minutes early or 15 minutes later than stated estimated time ( $500 fine) , not phoning authorities as required, and filing flight plans... Braydon ( my copilot /friend / sort of like a son) did all the paperwork prior to departure- there's a lot of paperwork! I would have done it but figured he needed the practice:).
We made the required phone calls to USA and Canadian flight services as well as customs and went to Bellingham . Arrived with expired airplane tag and had been told during earlier phone call " shouldn't be a problem" by US customs. Well , they were right ,no problem ! They were efficient helpful and no hassles ! Flew on to Orcas Island in San Juan group . We were welcomed by airport manager who encourages everyone to come back and spend some time ( see picture which looks north towards Victoria) . I visited Rosario resort on Orcas Island many years ago and it basically took us 6 hours to get there via road and ferry. The trip back to Abbotsford by plane 20 minutes!
Canadian authorities very accommodating ending a day of learning . I've asked Braydon to please develop a checklist as to the many required steps as he won't always be around to help! He's a commercial pilot and will likely be flying in on Ontario's lake country this summer.
